costumes and dresses of Rajasthan

About UsEven as you plan a visit to the “desert state” of Rajasthan, brace yourself for a delightful rendezvous with its dazzling colors. From the majestic monuments to the costumes of Rajasthan, you will find these colors beckoning you from every nook and corner of the state.

Rajasthan being a hot and arid state, there is not much to speak of in terms of greenery. But when it comes to the presence of colors, nothing can beat Rajasthan at it. And this vibrancy is also displayed by the delightful costumes of Rajasthan that are worn with great pride by its entire populace.

The brightly hued Rajasthani costumes are a telling comment on life and culture in the state. Right from the simple village folk to the descendants of royal families, the people of Rajasthan in India prefer bright colors that stand out in stark contrast to the barren landscape thus underlining their jest for life.

The costumes worn by the men and women folk of Rajasthan are well defined to complement the climactic conditions in the state.

Women’s Costumes: Women in Rajasthan wear ghagras that are ankle length, umbrella shaped skirts. These ghagras come in different styles and colors, the popular ones being the printed cotton ghagras with tie and dye prints. A choli or blouse is worn with the ghagra along with an odhni that serves as a head cloth or veil. Other attires worn by the women of Rajasthan include the sari and salwar suit.

Men’s Costumes: The turban or the pagri is an important part of a man’s costume in Rajasthan. These turbans come in many styles that denote the region and caste of the wearer. The men folk of Rajasthan wear angrakhas that are of two types – the frock style, waist length kamari angrakha and the long angrakha that reaches below the knees. Dhotis and pyjamas are used to cover the lower half of the body. Today, western clothing like shirts and pants are also worn by the men folk of Rajasthan.
