A collage of colors and attractions, Rajasthan has always been synonymous with variety. Even when it comes to the languages of Rajasthan, this variety is but visible. Hindi is the principal language spoken in different variations that are collectively known as Rajasthani. There are five primary dialects spoken in Rajasthan, namely, Marwari, Mewari, Mewati, Dhundhari and Harauti.
The most common of all Rajasthani languages is Marwari that is spoken in the Jodhpur district and its surrounding areas. At other places in Rajasthan like Barmer, Pali and Nagaur, Marwari is mixed with other dialects and spoken in a different manner. One can also see the influence of the Marwari dialect in Rajasthani districts like Bikaner, Udaipur, Ajmer, Chittorgarh and Jhunjhunu.
Spoken in the Mewar region of Rajasthan, Mewari is known as the eastern variation of the Marwari dialect. It is also spoken in the western parts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Thar and Parkar. Mewari is also known as Bikaneri in Bikaner and Bagri in Churu.
Dhundari is spoken in the Rajasthani districts of Tonk, Kota, Jaipur, Bundi, Ajmer, Jhalawar and some parts of Kishangarh. Meanwhile, Mewati is the mode of communication in areas lying in the northeast of Rajasthan. It is the language that was earlier spoken by the Meos of Mewat. Lastly, Harauti is the dialect that is spoken in the districts of Kota, Bundi, Jhalwar and Tonk. Other dialects/languages of Rajasthan include Malvi, Bundeli, Marathi, Nemadi and Bhili among others.
A travel to Rajasthan in India always promises to be a wonderful affair and with so much variety to be seen in every aspect, it is no wonder that people return to explore this desert state time and again.
