Gaitore, Jaipur, is situated on the Jaipur-Amber Road and was the cremation site of the rulers of Jaipur. Present here at Gaitore, Jaipur are royal cenotaphs of the Maharajas. Each cenotaph is constructed in honour of each of the former rulers of Jaipur. These cenotaphs are called ‘chattris’ and are a typical Rajasthani structure and are not found anywhere else other than Rajasthan. Gaitore is one of the famous monuments of Rajasthan.
All the ‘chattris’ at Gaitore, Jaipur are immeasurably beautiful but what takes the cake is a magnificent white cenotaph, that has exaggerated carvings of peacocks and other delicate patterns. This ‘Chattri’ belongs to Sawai Jai Singh II.
There is a belief that the carvings on the ‘Chattris” represent the taste of the person, they are built in honour of. Even today, if observed carefully, you can see faint traces of paintings that once graced these intricately designed cenotaphs of Gaitore, Jaipur.
